For an outstanding career working on the design and construction of underground projects, for extensive contributions to the engineering profession as a member and officer of many technical and professional societies and for teaching and mentoring young engineers on topics of tunnel design and construction, subsurface investigations, rock mechanics and professional practice.

Biography

Gary S. Brierley, President of Doctor Mole Incorporated, graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering. He has become known as an expert in the tunneling industry. He has improved underground design practices by serving as a project manager and providing executive oversight on many well-known projects throughout the United States including DuPont Circle Subway Station, the Rochester New York CSO Project, Caldecott Tunnel Fourth Bore, the Dulles Airport Tunnel System and Boston’s Big Dig.

Brierley has also developed a reputation as an entrepreneur and has participated in two successful start-up engineering design practices: Brierley and Lyman and Brierley Associates. He has served as President of the American Underground Construction Association, Chairman of the Underground Technology Research Council, and as a member of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology. 

A member of several professional societies, Brierley has authored more than 200 technical papers and articles for tunneling publications including the “Ask Dr. Mole” column for TBM magazine.

At present, Brierley is serving as a sole proprietor consultant assisting engineers, contractors, attorneys and owners with the design and construction of underground projects and with the resolution of disputes involving underground construction.
